Tip-free dining means exactly what it sounds like: you pay the price on the menu, and that's the total. No tip prompt appears during checkout. No tip line shows up on your receipt. No automatic service charge gets added before you can leave. The price you see is the price you pay.
This used to be the standard at most American restaurants. Counter service, fast food, and quick-service spots operated on a simple model: fixed menu prices, no tipping expected. But over the past decade, point-of-sale software companies like Square and Toast made tip prompts a default feature — and most businesses never bothered to turn them off.
The result is tip screens at fast-food counters, coffee kiosks, airport grab-and-go stands, and anywhere a modern card reader exists. A 2025 Square report found that tip prompts now appear in over 74% of all food and beverage transactions. Most of those transactions involve counter service where tipping was never the norm.

Certified listings go through an additional verification step with the restaurant owner or manager directly.
Listings are periodically re-verified, especially when chains make POS system changes or restaurants update their checkout flow.
Restaurant owners can also claim their listing and apply for SkipATip Certified status — a verified badge that tells customers their checkout is guaranteed tip-free. Certification is $49 + $39/month and includes featured placement in search results.
The Tipping Laws Every Diner Should Know
Tipping is never legally required in the United States. But the economic reality behind tipping varies dramatically by state, and understanding it helps you know when your tip genuinely matters and when a tip screen is just a POS default that nobody turned off.

What's the difference between a tip and a service charge?
A tip goes directly from customer to employee and is voluntary. A service charge is a mandatory fee added to your bill — it belongs to the employer first, who then distributes it to staff. Service charges are fully taxable wages.
Do fast food workers depend on tips?
No. Counter service and fast food workers are paid full minimum wage by their employer. They are not classified as tipped employees under federal or state law, so no tip credit applies to their wages. A tip screen at a fast food counter is a software feature, not a wage mechanism.
How do I submit a restaurant to SkipATip?
Go to skipatip.com/submit. It takes about 60 seconds. Include the restaurant name, location, and confirmation that no tip screen appears at checkout. Submissions are reviewed before going live in the directory.
What if a listed restaurant starts showing tip prompts?
Use the Report button on any restaurant's listing page to flag a change. We review reports promptly and update or remove listings that no longer meet the tip-free standard. The directory is only useful if it stays accurate.
Does SkipATip cover restaurants outside the US?
Currently US-only. Tipping norms internationally vary so significantly that a separate guide would be needed. Most countries outside North America do not have tip-prompt culture at all — it's a predominantly American and increasingly Canadian phenomenon.
