Tipping used to be a reward for exceptional service. Now it's a mandatory performance at the coffee counter, the fast-food window, and the self-checkout kiosk. The iPad flips. The screen shows 18%, 22%, 25%. The “No Tip” button is tiny and judgmental. You tip. You didn't want to. You felt pressured.
That's tip creep — and it's a real problem. 78% of consumers say tipping has become excessive. 74.5% of transactions now show a tip prompt, including fast food. And 59% of people say they feel compelled to tip even when they don't think it's warranted.

The last straw? A $4 drip coffee with a tip prompt suggesting $1.50. For a coffee that was poured from a carafe. By a machine. We said no — and then we built a whole website about it.
